TWIP – EXCLUSIVE: deeproot – the Next Misadventure or a Pinball Revolution?, Guardians Stream, Cyber Monday Deals, More

The Scoop

Guardians of the Galaxy Stream Highlights

Last week, Dead Flip (TwitchFacebookTwitter) streamed the newest pinball machine from Stern Pinball, Guardians of the Galaxy.  The stream was very well done with direct video from the display: watch the full stream here.

General Notes

  • There were no callouts.
    • Hate to start with a negative, but it was pretty glaring that the callouts were missing.  Stern plans to have custom callouts from licensor-approved voice actors, but ran into some unexpected hold ups with approvals before the stream.  When the stream was originally scheduled, they had planned to have the callouts included but some things out of their control changed that.  We’re hearing rumors that the callouts will include Rocket the Raccoon, and that they are hilarious.  Hopefully we’ll see an update with the callouts soon as it sounds like they are going to be very entertaining!
  • The two licensed songs from the movie (Hooked on a Feeling and Cherry Bomb) start when you’re not in a mode.
  • The game is shipping with 0.65 code.

**EXCLUSIVE:  deeproot – the Next Misadventure or a Pinball Revolution?

deeproot Pinball has been quietly making progress on their path and plan to become a major pinball manufacturing company.  They have been in licensing talks for several major pinball titles.  They are currently looking to hire a Pinball Game Designer and a Game Writer (click here for the openings and descriptions including salary).  They are hoping to have their manufacturing facility finalized in the next 2-3 weeks.

This Week in Pinball will be sharing an **EXCLUSIVE** interview with deeproot on Thursday.  Some of the topics covered include:

  • Why they hired John Popadiuk
  • Updates on deeproot’s efforts to make Zidware customers/vendors whole
  • Information on their upcoming public announcement
  • Why deeproot Tech decided to pursue pinball as a new venture
  • What type of build quality to expect from deeproot (hint: using a car comparison, they want to build a Ferrari and sell it at KIA prices)
  • What is deeproot Pinball’s target market (hint: its you)
  • The possibility of mass producing Magic Girl, Retro Atomic Zombie Adventureland, and Alice in Wonderland

deeproot is extremely confident that they will be a very successful pinball manufacturer.  The interview will make some in the pinball community angry, some won’t believe anything deeproot says, and some will be skeptical but quietly hopeful/excited.  Stay tuned!

Statement from Heighway Pinball

Last week, This Week in Pinball shared that there is some frustration in the pinball community regarding the prospect of new titles being worked on at Heighway Pinball when there are people that are still owed refunds from Heighway, and that there has also been frustration over the lack of communication from Heighway.  We reached out to Heighway Pinball concerning these frustrations and received the following response:

“We are not uninterested and we are not ignoring, but I admit we have a hard time coping with everything. The task of turning this business around is huge to say the least. We are on course to do it though and are committed to succeed. Which we will, even it takes longer than most people including ourselves would have wanted. We understand that people are upset and we do get that it is hard to understand why we are doing what we are doing. In time it will all be understood though and, even more importantly, everybody will get what they have paid for. Once that has been achieved we will continue making great pinball machines for years to come. New exciting titles are in the making, even though they obviously are a non-priority for the time being and will so be until the old legacy has been managed properly.”

Heighway also sent a letter out to customers – read the full letter here.  It addressed reasons behind the lack of communication.  One insightful part of the letter addressed the timeline of refunds and production, and went on to discuss some updates on the Limited Edition model:

“In order to maximise production of machines for our Distributors and for you, we have adopted a clear strategy and cashflow plan that prioritises production of machines over all aspects of the business. In this regard, we have a production/ cashflow schedule that deliberately spreads the shipping of pre-ordered machines and remaining refunds from the previous CEO’s time over a number of months. Similarly on the fixes for the machines shipped in the first months of this year. You will get your machines but we will not ship them all together. We have to do it this way if we are to continue to turn this business around, having decided to save it in June. We have your orders and plan to ship to you all. Some of your orders date back to 2014!

On the LEs, there are two coming pieces of news. Firstly, the 3 trims of the LE are currently being made up. Once we have them back at the factory, we will show you pictures of the production choices you have; Black, Blue and Green. In addition, we have negotiated with Roman Glass the option to supply their Roman/ PDI glass on our machines. This add on is offered at $250/ £195/ €220 once Roman’s first pallet arrives at the factory during December.”

Christopher Franchi Working on Two Titles to be Release at Expo 2018

On Kaneda’s Pinball Podcast, Christopher Franchi shared some interesting information regarding his current projects (check out the full episode on Sound Cloud here).  First, he is working on a new title for Stern which is supposed to be released at the Pinball Expo in Chicago in the fall of next year.  Second, he is also working on the next Ka-Pow title, which is also expected to be released at Expo next year.  Click here to listen to the portion of the interview where Franchi discusses these projects.

Regarding possible themes for the Ka-Pow game, Franchi says “It is something that people are extremely familiar with.  I think its also something that some people thought would never happen…it’s very big…this is something that crosses many cultures.”

Circus Maximus Second Title – Kingpin?

A little background: Circus Maximus is a company that is working on Python’s Pinball Circus and a second unnamed title (click here for updates on the Pinball Circus project).  The Kaneda Pinball Podcast also had an episode last week that shared that the second title would be Kingpin, which is one of the machines that has been rumored to be the second title.  Check out the podcast here.

Paul Kiefert is a driving force behind Circus Maximus – check out the pic to the right on his personal Facebook page…the caption reads “This is what happens when a friend says we can do anything we want with his pinball machine and he leaves to pick up supplies for dinner.” …and the machine they are working on is Kingpin.

TWIP can neither confirm nor deny this claim that Circus Maximus is working on a Kingpin, but if they were to do a Kingpin remake, the game would not be a 100% exact remake as it would have new graphics and possible tweaks from the original game designer.  🙂

Thunderbirds Playfield Changes

Homepin announced last week that they have made changes to the Thunderbirds playfield: “We are almost finished the updating of Thunderbirds playfield plastics. Many small changes, some minor, some major. Many changes because we have shifted things around on the playfield based on our feedback from Pinfest and Brisbane showings.”  They included the picture on the left of the playfield plastics.  For the Facebook post, please click here.

The Silverball Saloon – Opening Wednesday!

Our friend Bruce from the Slam Tilt Podcast (Podcast Garden, Facebook, TwitchYouTube) has been hard at work preparing for the opening of The Silverball Saloon, and it opens to the public on November 29th!  Located in Rochester, New York (upstate NY between Buffalo and Syracuse), The Silverball Saloon will feature food, drinks, pool, darts, and of course pinball.  For a sneak peak at their menu, click here.  Check out their Facebook page for updates, and most importantly stop in for a drink and food and some pinball – help support those that are helping spread pinball!

Guardians of the Galaxy “Deep Dive” – Likes, Dislikes, Features, Questions

It is time once again to over-analyze expensive toys!  Is it possible to do a “deep dive” into a game without seeing any game play?  No?  Well lets try it anyway, shall we?  Although all we’ve seen is a gameplay teaser, we’ll dive into the game and what we know.  Below is an Overview of the machine, Five Likes, Five Dislikes, and Five Questions.  Thoughts are based on the Stern’s pictures and press release, and videos of the teaser trailer and and gameplay teaser.

TOYS/FEATURES

Groot Head

The beautifully sculpted Groot Head Bash Toy not only talks, but also “eats” pinballs to serve as a physical ball lock as you make progress towards multi-ball.  The when multi-ball is activated, the Groot Head releases the ball through his mouth.  To see it in action, check out this video.

Rocket Figurine that Fires the Ball Back at You

Hit the Rocket target to have him fire the pinball back at your flippers.  On the Pro model the Rocket figure is static, and Premium/LE models the figurine recoils like he’s firing a gun.  For a video example of the Pro model, click here.

Orb Toy

On the Pro model, the Orb is always open.  On the Premium and LE models, the Orb mechanism opens and closes to reveal the lit Infinity Stone.  Also, below the Orb is a “drop target with trip coil virtual ball lock”.  To see the ball lock in action click here.

Magnets

Who doesn’t like magnets?  There is one magnet on the Pro model and three on the Premium and LE models.  Check out this video of the magnets in action!

Groot Arms

Premium/LE on the left, Pro on the right

Custom molded Groot arms for the Premium and LE can be seen in the picture above, compared to the Pro model on the right that doesn’t include the Groot arms.

RULES AND CODE

Here are some of the basics of the rules/code:

  • There are eight modes/missions – you choose your mission at the start of a game
    • Sibling Rivalry
    • Escape Kyln
    • Knowhere
    • Quill’s Quest
    • Antiquities Shop
    • Pod Chase
    • Sanctuary
    • Yaka Arrow
  • Hadron Enforcer
    • “Complete Hadron Enforcer targets to light Hadron Enforcer button.  Push Hadron Enforcer button to collect lit mission/multi-ball shots.”
  • Multipliers
    • Completing the NOVACORPS lanes lights the shot multipliers.  Shooting a lit multiplier makes that shot worth 2x for the remainder of the ball in play.”
  • There are at least two multi-balls
    • Orb Multi-ball
      • “Knock down the Orb drop target and and shoot the Orb lane to advance towards Orb Multi-ball.  Repeat three times to expose the Infinity Stone and start Orb Multi-ball.”
    • Groot Multi-ball
      • “Shoot Groot to open his mouth and lock balls.  Lock three balls to start Groot Multi-ball.”
  • There are two Wizard Modes
    • Immolation Initiative
      • “Start all modes/multi-balls to qualify Immolation Initiative Wizard Mode at the right scoop.”
    • Save Xander
      • “Complete all modes/multi-balls to qualify Save Xander Wizard Mode at the right scoop.”

FIVE LIKES

1. The Artwork

The artwork on all three models really pops and has a ton of detail.  (Art by Christopher Franchi)

2. Quality of Toys

The Groot head and hands, the Orb toy, etc. – all toys look to be well sculpted with a lot of attention to detail and high quality.

3. Theme Integration

Between the artwork, the toys, the missions/modes, and the attention to detail, this machine really looks like the world of Guardians of the Galaxy.  As we learn more about the music, the displays, and the callouts, the theme integration could get even better than it is now.

4. The Layout

Yes, it has a lot of similarities to the layouts of Metallica and Iron Man.  But those two machines are beloved by the pinball community because of how well they shoot.  Between the drop target area to the right, Rocket firing pinballs back towards your flippers, and magnets messing with ball this will play differently than other machines with similar layouts.  (Game designed by John Borg)

5. The Theme

Theme is very subjective, but Guardians of the Galaxy is current and has a fun super hero vibe but doesn’t feel like a typical super hero type movie.  It is an action movie but has a lot of comedy in it as well, which will hopefully be incorporated into the display and callouts.

FIVE DISLIKES

1. No Songs from Soundtrack?

The soundtrack is a large part of this film as throughout the movie the main character, Star Lord, listens to a mixed tape that his mother gave him.  He risks his life for the mixed tape at times since it serves as the connection between Star Lord and his mother.  Right now it sounds like the score of the movie will be included but not the songs from the soundtrack.  Listen to examples of the score here and here.  Does it mean the game won’t be good without songs from the soundtrack?  No of course not, but it would be better with at least a couple songs from the movie.

2.
Left Ramp Flimsy?

In this slow motion video clip. the left ramp appears flimsy.  Hopefully there is a way to stabilize it so it doesn’t shake like it does in the clip.

3.
Which Side Are We On?

Most of the time when a bash toy is a character, it is a “bad guy” (Balrog from Lord of the Rings, Zombie on The Walking Dead, etc.).  Why are we bashing Groot?  He seems like a nice guy/tree with a limited vocabulary.  And why is Rocket firing pinballs at us as we play?

4.
Line of Sight with Groot Hands

The Groot hands on the Premium and LE look fantastic, like Groot is emerging right up through the playfield.  However, there is some concern that his hands may block your view when you’re aiming some of the shots.

5. Gold Armor on the Limited Edition

Yes this is very subjective, however, the gold armor doesn’t seem to match very well on the Limited Edition.  Maybe it will look better in person.

FIVE QUESTIONS

1. How far along is the code?

2. How will the display be integrated?

3. Who will do the callouts?

4. Will there be callouts from the movie?

5. Are there any plans to include any songs from the soundtrack in the future?

BONUS MATERIAL

For those concerned that when Groot multi-ball starts the balls may go straight down the middle, check out this video where it appears that the magnets may activate as the balls are coming down towards the flippers causing them to be more random and avoid going down the center.

Dead Flip (TwitchFacebookTwitter) will be streaming the reveal stream this month, and we’re already looking forward to seeing this machine in action!

Disclaimer: All opinions are subject to change because I’m fickle with pinball machines the more I play them 🙂

The Scoop

Guardians of the Galaxy Rumor Round-Up

The next Stern Pinball machine is right around the corner, and it is time to get hyped!  This Week in Pinball reached out to Stern to get a hint on the timeframe of the release – and their response was a friendly smiley face like this: 🙂 … so does that mean the new theme is based on the Emoji Movie?  Um, no, you’re looking into that way too much.  So we’re going on rumors here, and this is what we’re hearing:

  • Pictures of the machine are likely to appear online very soon, possibly within days
  • The theme is heavily rumored to be Guardians of the Galaxy
  • The game is rumored to be shipping in November
  • It is rumored the game will be at IAAPA in Orlando which takes place November 13-17th
  • There are rumors that John Borg is designing it and Christopher Franchi is the artist

Rumored features and details of the game:

  • Rumored to have three two flippers **edited
  • Rumored to have three two ramps **edited
  • Rumored to have a large Groot head that is possibly like Rudy on Funhouse and possibly eats pinballs
  • Rumored that an upper flipper is used to hit the Groot head **edited
  • Rumored to have one of the best toppers ever

Yes we have used the word “rumored” way too many times now, so this article needs to end.  Can’t wait to see the machine – look for This Week in Pinball to release initial thoughts soon after the reveal!

Pirates of the Caribbean New Info

As mentioned previously, Jersey Jack Pinball announced their newest game Pirates of the Caribbean at Expo.  The game is packed with features and the response from the pinball community has been overwhelmingly positive.  (Check out TWIP’s Deep Dive into the game here.)  We reached out to Jersey Jack Pinball to find out some additional details:

  • The game will ship with the code at “Rules Complete” with all features included in the game (it was at around 20-30% at Expo)
  • Kevin McNally, who does the callouts in the game, re-recorded lines from the films and did many many unique recordings for the game
  • The clips from the movies in the game provide as much footage as the Licensor would allow

David Thiel, who did the sound for the game, also made an insightful post on Pinside regarding the music for the machine.  One of the interesting parts of the post reads “I write custom music for pinball. Pinball music is a subset of all music. A lot of music cues from movies are evocative but would either be lost in pinball play or are just not right. So there is something to be said for music written expressly for this application.”  Check out the full post here.

Python’s Pinball Circus Updates

Last week, This Week in Pinball wrote an article detailing updates on the Pinball Circus “remake” by Circus Maximus, along with some of the history of the machine.  Check it out here.  For the tl;dr crowd, here is the short version:

  • The first whitewood is finished (a whitewood is an early prototype without artwork)
  • The second whitewood has started and will implement several changes over the first whitewood (see article for list of changes)
  • After completing the whitewoods, they will then build 12 sample games and if there is enough interest/demand, the game will go into production

Circus Maximus also spoke to This Week in Pinball about a second machine they are building alongside Python’s Pinball Circus…see below.

Circus Maximus Building New Machine

As part of the updates to the Pinball Circus “remake”, it was revealed that Circus Maximus has also been building a second machine along with Python’s Pinball Circus.  Some of the reasons for the second game are:

  • The unusual shape of Pinball Circus makes manufacturing a challenge and expensive
  • Python’s Pinball Circus is a passion project in memory of Python Anghelo, and is a much more expensive machine to build than their second project
  • The new machine will be a more popular title, and would be in much higher demand than Python’s Pinball Circus, which would help fund the rest of the Circus project

There are several rumors regarding what the new title may be, and the top rumor is currently Kingpin, which would be a remake from 1996.  This would be an interesting remake for several reasons, including that there were only nine games originally produced, and it was the last machine Mark Ritchie designed the last physical pinball machine Mark Ritchie designed (he designed virtual playfields since then).  More info will be coming in 2018 so stay tuned!

Batman ’66 Code Update

Stern announced code updates for Batman ’66 models (to v0.80), along with a timeline going forward.  According to their Facebook post, “This code update adds depth to the major villain story lines (Catwoman, Joker, Penguin, and the Riddler).  The code also features more Adam West and Burt Ward custom speech.  The dedicated programming team working on Batman plans to release another Batman code update around Thanksgiving, and an additional code update around Christmas.”  For a list of all changes, click here for the Premium, here for the Limited Edition, and here for the Super Limited Edition.

Aliens Being Unboxed and More on the Way?

This past week we’ve seen many Alien owners receiving their machines.  There have been a few issues which seem to be relatively minor for now, keeping in mind in many cases the machines have travelled long distances.  Cointaker in the US is also apparently expecting another container of games to arrive in 3-4 weeks.  Our friends at Straight Down the Middle: a pinball show (YouTube, Facebook, Twitch) shared a very well done unboxing video which can be seen here.  Check it out!

First Heads-Up Pinball Championship Winner

Congrats to Raymond Davidson who won the IFPA’s first Heads-Up Pinball Championship!  It was held Saturday, October 28th at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The format of the tournament was exciting and new: the matches consisted of head-to-head challenges being played out simultaneously on two different machines of the same title, and whichever player completes the challenge first is declared the winner for that game.  The final round came down to Karl DeAngelo and Raymond Davidson, with Raymond having to beat Karl twice to win.  Raymond won a challenge on Ghostbusters, then the last challenge was to score a super jackpot on Ghostbusters.  It was very close but Raymond hit a clutch ramp shot to win it.  See the full stream on Twitch here, and go to the 5 hour and 44 minute mark to watch the last match.  The winner got a brand new Stern Aerosmith Pro pinball machine!  (Second place got $300.)

Interesting notes about Breakshot:

  • “This 1996 game is designed in the older electromechanical style, with no ramps and a one-level playfield. It has a dot matrix display that shows the scores as score reel numbers, and digital sound that simulates EM chimes.” – ipdb.org
  • “3 ball cue in the center of the playfield with a hole at the bottom, and 3 scoops at the top; after each ball is captured, a large metal plug rises and blocks the opening and the locked balls rest against it. The player must then hit the plug to knock the balls into the scoops to start multiball.” – ipdb.org
  • “According to the book Pinball Memories, Capcom promoted ‘Breakshot’ as having the first loadable captive ball feature on a pinball. However, a different type of loadable captive ball feature can be found on Bally Midway’s 1986 ‘Strange Science’ and Bally Midway’s 1987 ‘Heavy Metal Meltdown’.” – ipdb.org
  • Easter Eggs – from the Cows and Easter Eggs website
    • Want to see a moose kick a cow in the behind?  Shoot around the Mini-loop, then backwards around the right orbit to the rollover-lanes.
    • At the end of the game, hold both flippers before and during the mossed animation for a fun sound effect.

The Scoop

Kosmic Khaos Pinball Machine?

The Texas Pinball Festival released their 2018 theme – Kosmic Khaos – on their Facebook page last week (see it here).  It contained the following statement “Presenting the #TPF2018 theme and shirt design! Art by Blake Dumesnil. “Kosmic Khaos” concept by Mark Ritchie (more on that to come).”  Kaneda’s Pinball Podcast interviewed Blake who shared that the Kosmic Khaos theme stems from an idea Mark Ritchie had for a original pinball theme.  The theme is being developed for TPF, but they are also going to “develop it further into something that could possibly be rolled into a game one day”.   Click to hear the portion of the interview that discusses the possibility of this game.  Keep an eye out for further updates from the Texas Pinball Festival to see if this gets some legs and actually is made into a pinball machine!  You can check out the Texas Pinball Festival on Facebook here or at their website here.

More Thunderbirds teasing from Homepin!  Mike from Homepin is unable to show the full playfield because not all of it has been approved as of yet, but last week they did release this video showing some blocked gameplay.  Combining a still from that video and zooming in on a photo from this post, we have our best (blurry) looks at the playfield seen here and here.  Homepin previously released a video of a possible playfield toy and part of the playfieldelectroluminescent headbox decals, steel aprons with built-in leveling bubbles, and a pic of the lock inserts.  Homepin plans to show off the machine at Pinfest in Australia coming up October 7th and 8th.  Check out Homepin’s Facebook page here for more updates.  Rumor has it that the Head2Head Pinball Podcast may be interviewing Homepin this week – check their website here and their Facebook page here.

Alien Updates

There are a few updates to report for Heighway Pinball from last week:

  • On Heighway’s Facebook page they announced they would be skipping software V0.99 and that all Alien machines would ship with “at least” V1.0 installed.  For a full list of all the software updates, click here.
  • This video was posted on Instagram of the beacon in action on the Alien Limited Edition model.
  • Word is that there is a shipment which was previously delayed on the water currently on it’s way to the United States.  The contents (parts/games) of the shipment are not fully known at this time.

TWIP – New Pinball Tournament, Bro is Back, The Big Lebowski Updates, Trudeau Updates, More

The Scoop

Heads-Up Pinball Championship

IFPA announced last week that the 2017 IFPA Heads-Up Pinball Championship will be held Saturday, October 28th at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas, Nevada. The format is exciting and new: the matches will consist of Head-to-Head Challenges being played out simultaneously on two different machines of the same title, and whichever player completes the challenge first is declared the winner for that game.  They hope to livestream the entire event.  The winner gets a brand new Stern Aerosmith Pro pinball machine!  Click here for an overview of the tournament, and click here to register.

Updates on John Trudeau Arrest

Following his arrest, pinball designer John Trudeau was released on bail from the DuPage County Jail last week.  Stern Pinball released a statement regarding the situation, which you can read at the bottom of the Pinball News article here.  For more in-depth analysis of this ugly situation, listen to this podcast from Nate Shivers from the Coast2Coast Pinball Podcast.   The cryptic anonymous thread comment that Nate references can be found here.

Play Pinball and Help with Hurricane Harvey Relief

After the catastrophic hurricane that hit the US last week, people in the pinball community have joined together to help raise money to help those affected.  The IFPA is waiving their typical 30 day rule for any tournaments in September that are held for the purpose of raising funds for Hurricane Harvey Relief.  Tilt-Hammer is selling $15 pins with all proceeds being donated to relief efforts.  There are too many relief efforts in the pinball community to list individually, look for one near you and help spread the word.

It’s Back!  “Bro, Do You Even Pinball?”

After taking a break over the summer, Buffalo Pinball’s popular weekly livestream “Bro, do you even pinball?” is back this week!  Check them out on Twitch here this Thursday, September 7th at 8:00 PM Eastern as they play Stern KISS.  It will be great to see Kevin, Nick and the gang back doing these weekly!

Thunderbirds Updates

Yes, we’ve been covering the Thunderbirds pin quite a bit.  But Homepin keeps releasing new teasers every week!  This week they released a video of a possible playfield toy and part of the playfield – see the toy here in action (not approved yet and subject to change).  They also released the End Credits of the dot matrix display on their YouTube channel, check it out here (quick animation at the end).  Last week we saw the electroluminescent headbox decals and the steel aprons with built-in leveling bubbles.  In past weeks, Homepin posted a video showing playfields being cut by their CNC machine, a pic of the lock inserts, the approved translite art, and teaser pictures of the playfield plastics.  Homepin plans to show off the machine at Pinfest in Australia coming up October 7th and 8th.  Check out Homepin’s Facebook page here for more updates.

Dutch Pinball Updates

Dutch Pinball released two updates in the past week regarding The Big Lebowski.  The first one discussed board redesigns (read the full update here).  In the second update they announced that they would introduce their new contract manufacturer at Expo in October (read the full second update here).  The second update also stated “We still are on schedule that the first ‘new’ TBL will be ready in October. We still are on track to deliver the first ‘new’ TBLs before the end of this year.”

Pinball Hall of Fame – Tim Arnold Funny Quote

Here is a recent article and video interviewing Tim Arnold who runs the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, which is one the the largest collections of pins in the world.  One of the quotes from Tim Arnold: “Depending on how you look at it, it’s either a great cultural treasure or it’s a bunch of old pinball machines we dug out of dumpsters and stuck in an old auto parts store.”

Pin of the Week

  • “Other notable features of Black Knight are a loud riding bell instead of the old familiar knock when a special (free game) was won, three ball multi-ball that did not require any previous targets to be hit before allowing balls to lock, and random score targets.” – Wikipedia

The Scoop

John Trudeau Arrest

In very disturbing news, last Friday Stern pinball designer John Trudeau was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of child pornography.  You can read more info from the Glendale Heights Police Department here.  Here is the Pinball News article regarding the arrest.  TWIP will follow up on this story as necessary.

<insert smooth transition from horrible news to getting back to fun pinball news>

Houdini Updates

On a lighter note, American Pinball shared some updates last week regarding their upcoming release, Houdini.  They mentioned that parts are being ordered and/or made in preparation for production, and that they are planning to ship games by the end of the year.  American Pinball also mentioned they hoped to have some games on location by Halloween (10/31), which is also the anniversary of Houdini’s death.  Check out American Pinball’s website here, where you can also find detailed Houdini pics.

Houdini Gameplay

For those unfamiliar with Houdini – a couple months ago, we got some quality Houdini gameplay footage from Zach and Greg on Straight Down the Middle: a pinball show.  Check out the four part series with Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and a fly-by of the game here.  Here are some of the highlights:

Check out more from Straight Down the Middle on their YouTube page, Twitch page, and Facebook page.

Thunderbirds Electroluminescent Headbox Decals

In spite of battling multiple typhoons last week, Homepin posted a feature list for Thunderbirds Pinball on their Facebook page (check it out here).  Some highlights include:

Homepin also posted a video showing playfields being cut by their CNC machine, check it out here.  Previously, we saw a pic of the lock inserts, the approved translite art, and teaser pictures of the playfield plastics.  Homepin plans to show off the machine at Pinfest in Australia coming up October 7th and 8th.  Check out Homepin’s Facebook page here for more updates.

Star Wars Updates – R2D2 Topper, Premiums Shipping Soon

Two updates regarding Stern Star Wars – first, an R2D2 Topper is supposed to be released soon.  Although specifics are not known about the topper, previous code included an option to “Disable R2D2 Projector”.  Check out the message here.  Second, there are several reports that distributors are telling customers the Premiums should start shipping in the next week or two.

Stern Updates – New Cabinets Bracing, Brazil Manufacturing?

If you’re unaware, Stern has had some issues with cabinets splitting on newer games.  They seemed to have addressed this issue with extra cabinet bracing – see pics of the extra bracing here and here – hopefully this won’t be an issue going forward.  Second, according to this Instagram post, some Stern Pinball titles will now be made in Brazil.  Translated, the post reads: Stern made in Brazil !!! It’s been a huge challenge keeping this secret since December 2015. But finally we can shout to the world that we will make Pinball again! Matic, who manufactured the famous J Esteban and EletroMatic until the 80’s, made a deal with Stern Pinball and will set up Pinball’s again in Brazil! Long conversations and negotiations took place. But now it’s official! These will be the first titles! Aerosmith premium, Star Wars pro, WWE Premium”

Alien Updates

Heighway Pinball announced that they will be removing the fiber optic ramp lights and refunding LE owners the cost of the lights.  Cointaker is also expecting a shipment from Heighway Pinball on 9/1.  It isn’t known exactly what will be included with the shipment.

Website of the Week

ipdb.org

If you want to find more information about any pinball machine, IPDB is the place to go.  From their website: “The Internet Pinball Machine Database — also known as the IPDB — is a comprehensive, searchable encyclopedia of virtually every pinball machine ever commercially made. The database currently includes 66,798 images of 6,084 games, 4,620 other game related files, and links to other pinball websites, grouped by machine. The database also includes pitch & bat baseball games, cocktail table machines, bingos, and payout machines … when they have a pinball theme.

The data in this database has been laboriously gathered by the Editors over many years, from books, photographs, flyers, web sites, pinball manufacturers, collectors’ personal records, and of course the pinball machines themselves. Most of the actual photographs in the database came from various collectors – over 2,377 different contributors to date.
